Why I started a business

I was never supposed to start my business. At least not when I did. As a green college graduate in 2013 I was very eager to enter my first corporate gig. Even though I felt that it wouldn’t be the best fit for me in the long run and my academic advisor strongly encouraged me to not “sell out,” it seemed that there was a lot I could learn from working in that type of environment. I was also a passionate reader and grew up around books, so the opportunity to work in publishing felt like a dream. Shortly after starting as an assistant publicist, I could see that the industry was moving more toward boutique, “outside” help. I figured that I’d meet a work bestie and by the time we were a respectable 35, we’d leave our “in-house” positions and start our own agency. It’s funny how things happen…

Ultimately, I left my position just shy of my 26th birthday because of my boss and the toxicity that seeped through the entire company. My experiences working for her were a mix of great joy and highs and some of my lowest lows. But this isn’t about her.

When I moved back to Rhode Island, I was doing so to put my life back together. I thought I’d move on to another corporate job, maybe in Boston, and get a fresh start. I’d work until I hit the age marker that I had so firmly set in my mind and then I could finally start my own business! But shortly after leaving New York, I began experiencing panic attacks and strong bouts of anxiety that I had never felt before. While I was working on myself, I decided to call in all of the people who said that they’d hire me if I ever left. That didn’t pan out as I thought it would, but it pushed me to see that being self-employed was where I wanted to be.

Forming Little Lion was one of the most exciting, and scariest, things that I’ve ever done. Since 2017, we’ve morphed from primarily offering on social media management and publicity to a full-service creative agency that provides web design, photography, copywriting, and brand strategy. This evolution has been in response to changing client needs and my own personal interests. The services that we provide support the ebbs and flows that you face, and support you at every turn.

Little Lion is the place where people who are serious about their work come to grow. You can learn more about our offerings or fill out the contact form!
